Advantages of Friction

Advantages of friction (or desirable effects of friction)

                        I.            Locomotion: when we walk, friction between our shoes and the ground prevents our shoes from slipping backward.
II.            Enhances fastening: friction between the bolt and the nut enhances their fastening ability. The friction between nails and wood also help the nail to hold woods together in firm position.
III.            Blending: friction between the grinding stones helps in grinding pepper, tomatoes, this is also true of the friction between the two rough discs of the grinding machine.
IV.            Stops motion: friction between the car tyre and the road helps to stop the motion of a moving car when the brake is applied.
                     V.            Production of electric charge: when certain materials are robbed against each other, static electric charges is produced. This principle is applied in the Van de Graff generator.
VI.             Ladder: when a ladder to be used to climb over a wall rest on the wall, friction between the foot of the ladder and floor prevent the foot of the ladder from slipping.
VII.            Making of fire: matches sticks are ignited when they are robbed against the side of the matches’ box. Fire can also be made by striking two stones together.

Importance of Transportation

IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION

The importance of transportation include the following:

1.     Availability of Raw Materials to Producers
With the aid of transportation, raw materials extracted are easily transported through the various means of transportation to industries or locations where they are processed into finished or semi-finished products. For instance, crude oil cannot be processed into fuel, kerosene etc without the help of transportation.
2.      Facilitates International Trade
Transportation has aided the movement of goods and services from one country to another. For instance, electronic product like radio, refrigerator, computer set etc. have been imported from Japan to Nigeria with the aid of transportation
3.      Employment Opportunities
Transportation is one of the main employers of labour, especially in the countries where white collar jobs are hard to come by (get). Many graduates work in Transportation Company like ‘The young shall grow’, ‘Edegbe Line’, ‘Libra Motor’ and so on. Also, countless number of Nigerians survive as motorcyclist, tricyclists, taxi drivers etc.
4.      Mobility of Workers
Workers from different parts of the country can be moved from one place to another with the aid of various means of transportation. For instance a worker residing in Benin can easily get to his/her place of work in Warri without much ado (delay).
5.      Improved Standard of Living.
Transportation has made it possible for goods and services to get to the consumers at the right time and in the right place. For instance, agricultural produce can get to urban cities while industrial products are made available to rural dwellers through the various means of transportation. This of course has helped to improve the quality of life of the people.
6.      Influences the Location of Industries
One of the conditions for siting industries is the availability of good transport network. This means that raw materials, semi-finished goods and finished goods can be moved to places where they are needed without any hindrance.

Difference between Public Corporations and Civil Service

MEANING OF PUBLIC CORPORATIONS

Public corporations are statutory bodies or government enterprises created by an Act of Parliament to provide essential services for the citizens at minimized costs.

The Nigeria Ports Authority, the Federal Radio Corporation, Nigeria Television Authority, etc. are examples of public corporations.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PUBLIC CORPORATIONS AND THE CIVIL SERVICE

The following are the major differences between public corporations and the civil service in Nigeria:

(i) Public corporations are expected to operate like commercial ventures while ministries are created and organised to provide services, much of which attract little or no payment.

(ii) A public corporation is managed by members of Board of Directors while the civil service or a ministry is managed by a minister advised by the Director General or Permanent Secretary.

(iii) The Chairman of the board of directors is the political head of a public corporation while the political head of a ministry is the minister.

(iv) The managing director or general manager is the corporation’s administrative head while a director general is the ministry’s administrative head.

(v) Employers of a public corporation are called public servants that of a civil service or a ministry are known as civil servants.

(vi) Workers of a public corporation are appointed or employed by the board of directors that of a government department are employed by the public service commission.

(vii) Government ministries and departments are characterised by bureaucracy while public corporations have flexible and quick decision making machinery.

(viii) A public corporation though profit making is not the main motive for its establishment is expected to make profit not to run at a loss while a ministry is a non-profit making organization
